William Osler Health System, Etobicoke General, Ancillary Services Building
The Etobicoke General Hospital (“EGH”) Etobicoke General Hospital is a busy, full-service acute care hospital which provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient care services. Each year, the hospital handles more than 70,000 emergency department patient visits, delivers more than 2,400 babies, and performs more than 15,000 surgeries. The hospital is also a “first responder” during any medical crisis at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Having served the local northern Etobicoke community for more than 42 years, EGH required redevelopment in order to continue to fulfill its role as a critical component of the Osler health system. The existing physical facilities were previously obstacles to EGH fulfilling its role and meeting the needs of its patients and community. Space deficiencies, physical capacities, outdated design, and infrastructure / systems failures were presenting challenges and barriers for staff to provide high quality health care in efficient, accessible, safe and sustainable environments. |
The large-scale rejuvenation and redevelopment of Etobicoke General transformed the pre-existing site and provided much needed space and resources.
The site’s new Etobicoke Wellness Centre (EWC) is a six-storey, 200,000 square foot structure that replaced the previously existing and aging medical office building that serves Etobicoke and surrounding communities. A bright, contemporary space, the EWC is home to several of Osler’s outpatient services, including a fracture clinic, diagnostic imaging services, and a new, 36-station satellite dialysis program. Moving from the site’s current medical office building will be doctors’ offices and clinics, as well as the addition of many other community doctors and health care services. |
