The No. 2 Fire Station Emergency Services Facility is 63,600 sq. ft. and situated in an industrial/commercial zone of London. This central orientation provides the most efficient access travel times from any remote Fire Station to the Maintenance Garage.
The longitudinal design of the triple wide, double depth apparatus floors of the No. 2 Fire Station and the Maintenance Garage, provides Fire Trucks with immediate access to Florence Street. A ring road encompasses the site permitting a drive thru Maintenance Garage, an exterior vehicle storage space for 5 Fire trucks and access for 54 parking spaces for staff and visitors.
The North Façade, curved on its North-East side, with oversized lettering identifying the building as a Fire Station and a Maintenance Garage, is given a base of stone (to represent the civic permanence of the emergency services building), a field of red brick (to contrast visually with the white stone base, and a cornice (to act as the top).
Triangular entrance canopy contrast the long red elevation to interrupt the eye and to invite the public and staff into the buildings’ entrances and related circulation corridors. In addition to the flagpole in front of the building, the dominant entrance canopy announces the civic identify of the building. Triangular towers, made as a combination of curtain glass and aluminum
composite panels on the north and south elevation provide public access to the service areas of the Maintenance Garage. Tinted green windows shield direct sunlight into the buildings’ administration areas while a skylight provides indirect light to the Kitchen and Dining areas.
A basic fat roof has been designed using sloped steel trusses that span the apparatus bays and open web steel joists that span the smaller service and administration areas.
